Swing gates look simpler than sliding gates, but the mechanical demands are actually higher. The motor has to overcome gravity, wind load and the leverage of a heavy leaf swinging on a single hinge. When they fail, the fault is rarely just electrical.

Typical swing gate faults

One leaf opening before the other, or one side dragging on the paving, is the single most common swing gate complaint. It's almost always caused by a bent hinge, a settled pier, or a mis-set delay on the control board. We diagnose which, and fix it properly. On a slider, the track and the rack are dealt with under sliding gate repairs.

A swing motor that hums but doesn't move usually points to a seized hydraulic piston (on ET Nice hydraulic models) or a stripped gear inside the arm. Neither is DIY territory. Our technicians carry rebuild kits for the common ET Nice and Centurion arms in stock.

Hinges, piers and mechanical alignment

A swing gate motor is only as good as the hinge it's mounted on. If the pier has settled, or the hinge has worn out its bushing, no motor in the world will move that gate smoothly.

We rebuild hinges, replace bushings, and where necessary chemically anchor new mounting brackets into the piers. Only then do we recommission the motor.

We test the beams, replace faulty photocells, and set up pedestrian-open mode so only one leaf opens when it's just a person coming through. Pair this with intercom systems or access control for a complete setup.

Why swing gates fail differently

A swing gate does not roll; it pivots. All of its load goes through the hinges, the posts and the arms, and that is where its faults live.

The commonest is a post that has moved. A gate post carries a lot of leverage, and ground that shifts a few degrees over years drops the far edge of the gate by a lot more. The gate starts catching on the ground, or the two leaves stop meeting in the middle, and the arms are asked to force it through.

Second is the arms themselves. Articulated and ram arms both wear at their pivots, and a worn pivot introduces play that lets the gate bounce at the end of travel. That bounce is what eventually cracks a mounting bracket. Anything that genuinely cannot wait is handled as an emergency gate repair, at any hour.

Third is the hinges: dry, worn, or rusted into a shape that no longer swings freely.

Every one of those is mechanical, and every one of them will destroy a motor that is asked to compensate for it.

Two leaves, and the timing that goes wrong

A double swing gate has to open and close its leaves in the right order, or they collide. The controller stages them, and that staging drifts.

The symptom is a gate that closes with the leaves catching each other, or one leaf reaching home a moment too early and holding the other off. It looks dramatic and is usually a delay setting rather than a failure.

What matters is checking why the timing drifted before resetting it. If one leaf has become harder to move than the other — a dry hinge, a dropped post, a dragging edge — the controller was compensating for something real, and resetting the delay just hides it for another few months. Ram arms against articulated arms

Ram arms are linear: a piston that pushes and pulls. They are strong, compact and well suited to gates that open outward with room behind the post. They do not tolerate a gate that has to swing through a tight arc.

Articulated arms fold, which lets them handle gates mounted where the post sits proud of the pillar, and gates that need a wider swing. They cost a little more and they cope with awkward geometry that a ram simply cannot.

Getting this wrong at installation is a common and expensive mistake. A ram fitted where an articulated arm belonged puts the whole load through the pivot at an angle it was never designed for, and it fails early no matter which brand is on the casting.

What a swing gate repair covers

Hinges first: freed, greased, and replaced where they have worn oval. Posts checked for plumb, and the gate checked for square against its opening. Automating a gate that has never been powered is set out under gate automation.

Then the arms — pivots, mountings and travel — and the brackets that hold them, which are frequently the part that has actually cracked.

Then the electrical side: board, capacitor, receiver, and the leaf timing set after the mechanics are right rather than before. Then safety beams, aligned and interrupted to test them properly.

Wind, weight and solid panels

A solid swing gate catches wind like a sail, and on an exposed stand that load goes straight into the arms and the hinges.

The symptom is a gate that has developed play — a bounce at the end of travel, or leaves that no longer meet cleanly — on a system that was fine for years. The wind did not break it in one afternoon; it worked the pivots loose over many.

Slatted and palisade gates avoid most of this, which is why they are the sensible choice on an open corner stand even when a solid gate looks better. Where a solid gate is already in place, the answer is heavier arms and stronger mountings rather than a bigger motor, because the load is mechanical. Where the fault turns out to be the motor itself, that is ordinary gate motor repair work rather than anything exotic.

The posts carry everything

On a swing gate every force ends up in the posts, and a post is only as good as what it is set in.

A post set in a shallow footing, or in ground that has been disturbed by trenching or by a tree, will lean over years. The lean is invisible at the post and obvious at the far edge of the gate, which drops and starts catching the ground.

Adjusting the arms to force a dropped gate through its arc is the wrong repair, and it is a common one. The right one is correcting the post — resetting the footing or, on a badly gone one, replacing it. It costs more on the day and it is the only version that lasts.

Hinges, and the cheapest job on the property

On a swing gate the hinges carry everything, and they are the least expensive thing to put right.

A dry hinge makes the motor work against friction it was never meant to see. A worn hinge lets the gate drop, which puts the leaf out of line with its partner and with the ground. A hinge that has rusted into shape stops the gate swinging true at all, and the arm takes that load. Getting a visitor from the gate to the house is what an intercom system is for.

Greasing and freeing hinges is minutes of work. Replacing a worn pair is an hour. Either is a fraction of the arm or the motor that fails when they are ignored, and on an older gate it is frequently the entire repair.

This is the single most under-requested job on a swing gate, and the one most likely to save somebody real money.

Automating an existing swing gate

Most manual swing gates can be automated, and the questions are all mechanical.

Are the posts plumb and set in something solid, because every force ends there. Do the hinges swing freely through the full arc. Does the ground rise through the swing, which decides how much clearance the leaves need. And is there room behind the pillars for the arms to sit and fold.

Where the posts are sound, automation is straightforward and the gate is usually better afterwards than it has ever been, because the hinges get sorted at the same time.

Where a post has moved, that gets corrected first. Bolting an arm to a leaning post transfers the whole problem to the motor, and it fails in a season. A diagnosis before anything is replaced is the whole basis of gate motor repairs here.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a swing gate repair take?
Most are under an hour. Hinge work is quick; a post that has to be reset is a bigger job with a curing time, and it is quoted separately rather than rushed.
Can one motor drive both leaves?
No — a double swing gate needs an arm on each leaf, staged by the controller so they do not collide. A single motor arrangement only works on a single-leaf gate.
My gate has developed a bounce at the end of its travel. What is that?
Play in the arm pivots, usually worked in over years by wind load or by a gate that has become heavier to move. Left alone the bounce cracks a mounting bracket, which is the expensive stage.
Should I replace my solid gate with a slatted one?
On an exposed stand it is worth considering, because a solid panel takes far more wind load and works the hinges and arms loose faster. It is not urgent, but it is worth knowing when a gate is being replaced anyway.
One leaf of my gate opens before the other. Is that broken?
That is deliberate — leaves are staged so they do not collide. It becomes a fault when the delay has drifted or when one leaf has become stiffer than the other, and the second cause is the one worth finding. Wheels, rack and pinion are the usual culprits, and they sit under sliding gate repair.
My swing gate scrapes the ground. What causes it?
Nearly always a post that has shifted, or hinges that have worn. Both drop the far edge of the gate, which is where the leverage is greatest. Fixing the post or the hinges is the repair; adjusting the motor to force it through is not.
Can you convert a swing gate to a sliding gate?
Sometimes, but it is a fabrication job as much as an automation one — it needs a track, a level run, and space alongside the opening. We will tell you honestly whether the site allows it before anybody spends money.
Which arm type do I need?
It depends on the pillar geometry and the swing arc. Rams suit straightforward outward-opening gates with room behind the post; articulated arms handle tight or offset mountings. Fitting the wrong one is a common cause of early failure.
One of my swing gate leaves opens before the other. Is that a problem?
It's a symptom of either a control-board delay setting or a mechanical bind on the slower leaf. Either way, it's easily fixed on-site.
Are hydraulic swing motors still repairable?
