Sliding gates take punishment. Rain, dust, the neighbour's cat, and a decade of daily cycling all wear the mechanical hardware long before the motor itself gives up. When yours starts sounding rough, jerking, or refusing to close all the way, it's usually a sign the mechanicals need attention.

The most common sliding gate problems

Nine sliding gate repairs out of ten trace back to four things: worn or flat-spotted wheels, a rack that has come loose or worn its teeth, a pinion that has shifted out of alignment, or a motor that has been silently overheating because it's been fighting the mechanical load. On a swing gate, the hinges, posts and arms come under swing gate repairs.

A gate that jerks as it opens is almost always a rack-and-pinion mesh issue. A gate that suddenly stops halfway is usually the over-current protection tripping on the board — a symptom that the motor is being asked to do more work than it should. Grinding noises point to a bearing on its way out.

Rack, wheels and mechanical hardware

The rack is the toothed strip your motor drives against. If it's the wrong height, loose, or made of steel where it should be nylon (or vice versa), it will destroy the pinion inside months. We carry both nylon and steel rack in stock and can replace section by section.

The wheels the gate rolls on are equally critical. Cheap wheels flat-spot, seize, or shear off — all of which force the motor to overwork. We replace worn wheels with sealed-bearing units that will outlast the next motor you install.

Motor, board and gearbox repair

When to consider a full replacement

The track is the fault more often than the motor

A sliding gate is a heavy panel balanced on small wheels running along a rail, dragged by a toothed rack. Almost everything that goes wrong with one is mechanical, and almost every callout arrives described as a motor problem.

Grit is the usual culprit. A track collects sand, leaf litter and the grinding paste that forms when the two mix with rain. The wheels stop rolling and start skidding, the motor draws more current to move the same gate, and the controller eventually decides something is in the way and stops.

Then the wheels themselves. A flat spot on one wheel makes the gate lurch at the same point in its travel every time, which is the single most recognisable symptom on a sliding gate. Left alone, that lurch works the rack loose, and the loose rack starts chewing the pinion.

The diagnostic anybody can do in a minute: put the motor on manual release and push the gate by hand from one end to the other. If it rolls smoothly and quietly the whole way, the fault is electrical. If it drags, grinds, tightens at a point, or needs a shove to start, the fault is mechanical — and the motor has been fighting it for months. Getting a visitor from the gate to the house is what an intercom system is for.

Rack, pinion and the failure that eats both

The rack is the toothed steel strip bolted along the gate; the pinion is the gear on the motor that drives it. They are consumables, and they fail together.

The sequence is always the same. Mounting bolts loosen over years of cycling. The rack drops a few millimetres. The pinion, instead of meshing cleanly, starts climbing the teeth. Once it climbs, it wears both parts fast, and the gate begins slipping or juddering under load.

Caught while it is only a loose rack, the repair is a re-shim and a tighten — cheap, quick, and it buys years. Caught after the teeth are rounded, both the rack and the pinion have to be replaced, and the gate has usually damaged its own mounting brackets by then too.

This is why a sliding gate that has started making a new noise deserves a look. The noise is the cheap stage.

Limit switches, and the gate that stops in the wrong place

A sliding gate knows where to stop because of its limit switches — magnetic, mechanical or electronic depending on the motor. When a gate stops short, overruns, or picks a slightly different stopping point each time, the limits are usually the reason. Deciding who may open the gate, and being able to withdraw it, is access control.

They drift. Magnets shift on their brackets, mechanical arms bend, and the gate itself moves a few millimetres on its rack over the years. On a Centurion D5-Evo the limits are electronic and set by running the gate through a learning cycle, which is straightforward when the mechanics underneath are sound and pointless when they are not.

That is the part worth knowing: resetting limits on a gate whose track is dragging simply teaches the motor a new set of wrong positions. The mechanics come first, the calibration second.

What a sliding gate service includes

Clearing and inspecting the full run of track. Checking every wheel for flats, seizure and play. Inspecting the rack along its whole length, tightening what has loosened, and re-shimming where it has dropped.

Then the pinion and gearbox: mesh, wear, and oil where the motor takes it. Then the electrical side — board, capacitor, receiver, and limits calibrated with the gate loaded rather than free. Automating a gate that has never been powered is set out under gate automation.

Finally the safety beams, which on a sliding gate take more knocks than anything else because they sit at bumper height beside a moving vehicle. Aligned, cleaned and tested by actually interrupting them, not by looking at an LED.

Gates on a slope, and why they fail early

A sliding gate on a driveway that rises or falls along its run is doing something the specification sheet never assumed. Gravity is either helping it open and fighting it closed, or the reverse, and the motor sees a different load in each direction.

The symptoms are recognisable: a gate that closes fast and opens slowly, or one that struggles at the same end every time. Over a few years the motor wears unevenly, and the gearbox goes long before it should.

The fix is rarely the motor. It is either relaying the track true, or specifying a heavier unit that carries the real load rather than the flat-ground equivalent. A property with a sloped run should be quoted on that basis from the beginning — and if an installer has not mentioned it, they have not looked. Wind, dust and the Highveld

Two things about this corridor shape sliding gate faults more than anything else.

The first is dust. Through the dry months a track fills with fine grit, and when the first storms arrive that grit becomes a grinding paste under the wheels. A track cleared before the rains and again after them will outlast one that is never touched by years.

The second is wind. A solid-panel gate is a sail. On an exposed stand the gate is pushed against one side of its track every windy afternoon, which wears the wheels on that side and works the rack loose faster than on a sheltered property.

Neither is exotic and neither is anybody's fault. They are just the reasons a gate here needs its track looked at more often than a brochure suggests.

The wheels, and the part everyone forgets

A sliding gate rests its entire weight on two or four small wheels. They are the cheapest components in the whole system and they decide the life of the most expensive one. A gate left standing open is treated as an emergency callout rather than a booking.

A wheel fails in one of three ways. Its bearing dries and seizes, so the wheel skids instead of rolling and wears a flat. Its tyre or rim wears unevenly, which makes the gate rise and fall through its travel. Or its bracket bends after an impact, so the wheel no longer sits square on the rail and grinds against one side.

Each of those makes the motor work harder for the same movement, and each is audible long before it is visible. A gate that has started to sound different is a gate telling you a wheel is going.

Replacing a pair of wheels is one of the least expensive jobs on a sliding gate, and skipping it is how households end up buying a gearbox.

What happens on a service visit

The gate is run end to end first, and listened to, before anything is touched. Most of the diagnosis happens in that one cycle.

Then the motor goes on manual release and the gate is pushed by hand along the full run, which separates a mechanical fault from an electrical one in about thirty seconds — and is the same test any owner can do before phoning.

Then the detail: track cleared along its length, wheels checked for flats, seizure and square, rack inspected bolt by bolt and re-shimmed where it has dropped, pinion mesh set, gearbox oil checked, board and capacitor tested, receiver and remotes verified, limits calibrated with the gate loaded, and beams aligned and interrupted to prove they actually stop the gate.

Then a written note of what was found, what was done, and what is going to need attention in the next year. That last part is the useful one.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a sliding gate repair take?
Most are under an hour on site once the fault is found. A rack and pinion replacement takes longer, and a gate needing its track relaid becomes a separate job that gets quoted rather than improvised.
Do I need to be home for the repair?
Somebody needs to give access and to be shown the manual release at the end. On a complex the gate authorisation matters more than the resident being there, and that is arranged before the vehicle leaves.
How much of a sliding gate repair is the motor?
Less than most people expect. On a large share of callouts the motor is sound and the fault is the track, the wheels or the rack. A technician who tests the mechanics before the electronics is the one who finds that.
Can a track be relaid, or does the whole gate have to be replaced?
A track can usually be relaid or re-set, and it is far cheaper than a new gate. Where the concrete base underneath has broken up, that needs correcting first — but the gate panel itself is normally fine.
My sliding gate judders at the same spot every time. What is that?
Almost always a flat spot on a wheel, or a section of rack that has dropped. Both are mechanical and both get worse. It is a cheap repair while it is still a judder and an expensive one once the rack and pinion have worn each other out.
How long should a sliding gate motor last?
Ten years or more on a gate that rolls freely and is serviced. Three to five on one dragging along a dirty or damaged track, because the motor spends its whole life overloaded. The track, not the brand, decides which one you get.
Can you repair the gate itself, or only the motor?
Both, within reason. Wheels, rack, brackets, track clearing and alignment are all part of the job. Where a gate frame is warped or a concrete track base has broken up, that is a fabrication or civils job and we will tell you so rather than bolt a motor to it.
Is it worth servicing a gate that is working fine?
On a sliding gate, yes — more than on any other type. A clean track and true wheels are the difference between a motor lasting ten years and three, and a service costs a fraction of the motor it protects.
How long does a sliding gate rack replacement take?
A full rack replacement on a standard 4-metre gate is typically completed in around 90 minutes on-site.
Can you replace just the wheels, or does the whole gate need work?
In most cases we can replace just the wheels and bearings. We only touch the gate frame if it's genuinely warped.
My sliding gate is very heavy — do I need a bigger motor?
Not always. Very often the existing motor is fine once the mechanical load is fixed. We measure the current draw before recommending an upgrade.
