Designing the system before we install

Every automation project starts with a site walk. How many users? Domestic, family, tenants? Do you want app control? Video intercom or audio only? Do you need to log access events? What does the backup power situation look like?

Motor, beams and safety

We work on every major brand — Centurion (D5, D10, D3, XTrac), ET Nice, Gemini, Hansa, DTS and BFT — with genuine replacement parts stocked on the van.

Every automation build includes a properly sized gate motor, safety beams tested under load, and a manual release procedure walked through with you and your family. Where the fault turns out to be the motor itself, that is ordinary gate motor repair work rather than anything exotic.

Access — remotes, keypads, intercoms, apps

Modern automation gives you options. Coded remotes for the family, a wireless keypad for the domestic worker, a video intercom for deliveries, and an app for when you're not home. All of these can trigger the same gate — and events can be logged so you know who came and went.

Backup power and load-shedding

This is the difference between an automated gate that works and an automated gate you have to manually push through Stage 6. For high-usage sites we can specify a small UPS to keep the controller and intercom fully online.

What automation actually involves

Automating a gate is a mechanical job with an electrical component, and the order matters. The assessment starts with the gate and the ground it moves over, not with the motor catalogue.

On a sliding gate: is the run level, is there space alongside the opening for the gate to travel into, is the track sound or does one need laying, and will the gate clear its full travel without catching. On a swing gate: are the posts plumb and solid, do the hinges swing freely, is there room behind the pillars for the arms.

Only once that is settled does the motor get chosen, and it is chosen against weight, length of travel and how many times a day the gate will cycle. That last figure is the one most often ignored, and it is the one that decides whether a motor lasts a decade or eighteen months. Then the civils, the cabling, the safety beams, the limits, and the handover.

Safety, and the part nobody quotes for

Infrared safety beams are not an accessory. A powered gate is a heavy object moving under motor force, in a space where children, pets and reversing cars all exist, and the beams are what stops it.

Fitted properly, they sit at a height that catches a small child and a low bumper, they are aligned so that the beam is not clipping the edge of the receiver, and they are tested by actually interrupting them rather than by watching an LED.

Fitted badly — too high, mounted on something that vibrates, or aligned to the edge of tolerance — they either fail to protect anything or they trip constantly, and a gate that trips constantly gets its beams disconnected by a frustrated household. That is the outcome worth avoiding, because it is the point at which the gate becomes genuinely dangerous.

Any quote that does not include beams is not a cheaper installation. It is an incomplete one. Anything that genuinely cannot wait is handled as an emergency gate repair, at any hour.

Making a gate work with the rest of the property

A gate is one part of getting on and off a property, and it works best specified alongside the rest of it. An intercom system decides who gets to open it. Access control decides who may, and keeps a record.

The practical questions are worth settling once: how a visitor announces themselves, how a domestic worker or a garden service gets in on a weekday, how a delivery is handled when nobody is home, and how the gate behaves when the power is out.

Answering those before installation costs nothing. Answering them afterwards usually means a second cabling job.

What you should be handed at the end

A gate that has been cycled repeatedly under load, not once. Limits set with the gate loaded. Beams tested by interruption. Remotes coded, counted, and the number written down.

A manual release that somebody in the household has personally operated, with you watching.

An itemised invoice naming what was fitted, and a written workmanship warranty alongside the manufacturer's cover on the hardware.

And a straight answer to the question of what to do at two in the morning when it does not work.

Retrofitting a gate that was built by hand

A great many gates in this corridor were fabricated locally, decades ago, and were never designed to be driven by a motor.

That is not a problem in itself — a well-made steel gate is often better than a modern one — but it changes the assessment. Hand-built gates are frequently slightly out of square, their frames flex more than a factory panel, and their wheels or hinges were chosen for a gate that a person pushed. On a swing gate, the hinges, posts and arms come under swing gate repairs.

What that means in practice: the frame gets checked for square and stiffened where it flexes, the wheels or hinges are usually replaced with something rated for powered use, and the rack has to be mounted to a straight edge that may need creating first.

Done properly, an old gate automates beautifully and outlives the motor. Done as a bolt-on, the flex in the frame works the rack loose within a year and the motor gets blamed.

What automation does not fix

It is worth being plain about this, because it is where disappointment comes from.

Automation does not make a badly hung gate hang well, and it does not make a dragging gate roll. It applies force to whatever is there, which means it makes every existing mechanical fault worse and faster.

It does not, by itself, control who gets onto the property. That is what an intercom system and access control are for, and a gate with a remote shared among everybody who has ever needed access is convenient rather than secure.

And it does not remove the need to be able to open the gate by hand. The manual release is part of the system, not an accessory to it.

What it costs, and what actually moves the number

The motor is a minority of a good installation. Civils, cabling, beams, and the labour to do all three properly are the rest, and they are what separate a system that lasts a decade from one that needs attention every winter.

So a quote worth comparing itemises them. Two quotes that differ by a large margin usually differ in the civils and the cabling rather than in the brand of motor, and the cheaper one is frequently cheaper because it is bolting to an existing pad and running cable along a wall.

The variables that genuinely change the price: whether new civils are needed, how far the cable has to travel and what it has to cross, whether the gate needs mechanical work before it can be automated, and whether a slider needs a track laid. You get a band after a phone conversation and a firm figure after a site assessment, because a gate motor installation quoted without somebody looking at the site is a guess.

Living with an automated gate

Three habits, and they take a few minutes a year between them.

Operate the manual release once, with the power on, and make sure somebody else in the household can do it too. That single drill converts most power-failure emergencies into a minor annoyance.

Clear the track or the hinge line before the rains and again after them. On a sliding gate, dust plus water is a grinding paste, and the track is where the whole system wears.

And take the new noise seriously. A gate that has started sounding different is the cheap stage of a repair that gets expensive if it is left until the gate stops.

Frequently asked questions

How much does gate automation cost?
It depends far more on the civils, the cable run and the condition of the gate than on the motor. You get a band on the phone and a firm figure after a site assessment — anyone quoting a final price without seeing the gate is guessing.
How long does an automated gate last?
Ten years or more where the gate rolls or swings freely and the system is serviced. Three to five where the motor is compensating for a mechanical fault, because it spends its whole life overloaded. Wheels, rack and pinion are the usual culprits, and they sit under sliding gate repair.
Can you automate a hand-built steel gate?
Usually yes, and they often work better than factory panels once done. The frame gets checked for square and stiffened where it flexes, and wheels or hinges rated for powered use replace ones chosen for a gate somebody pushed.
Will automating my gate make it more secure?
It makes it more convenient and more consistently closed, which matters. It does not decide who gets in — that is intercom and access control — and it does not improve a gate that is mechanically weak.
Can any gate be automated?

Not necessarily. Automation is about the whole system working together. An intercom is one option — a keypad or app-only setup is often enough for smaller households. A gate left standing open is treated as an emergency callout rather than a booking.
