How Long Does a Gate Motor Last?

5 min readPublished 18 April 2026

Ten years is the number most people quote. The real answer depends on brand, usage and how well it was installed in the first place.

The honest answer: 8 to 15 years

A well-installed Centurion D5-Evo, ET Nice Drive 500 or comparable motor typically gives 8 to 15 years of reliable service in a residential setting. The variance depends on how many cycles a day it does, how well it's protected from weather, and whether the mechanical hardware (rack, wheels, hinges) has been maintained.

What shortens the life

Mechanical neglect. A gate that binds on a worn wheel forces the motor to overwork every cycle, which cooks capacitors and shortens gearbox life. Regular servicing catches this — see our gate motor service checklist.

What extends the life

Weather protection, a clean and level track, annual servicing, and — critically — a competent original installation. A motor mounted crooked or wired badly starts life at a disadvantage and never recovers from it.

FAQs

Is it worth replacing a 10-year-old motor?
Often yes, especially if parts availability is starting to become a challenge. See gate motor installation.
