Centurion D5 Repair Guide

8 min readPublished 6 May 2026

The Centurion D5 is the workhorse of South African driveways. Here's what tends to go wrong, and what a proper repair looks like.

Control board failures

The D5 control board is robust, but not immortal. Blown fuses, damaged safety-beam inputs from lightning strikes, and moisture ingress into the controller box are the top three failure modes.

A full board replacement is a 30-minute job with the right stock. See gate motor repairs.

Capacitor failure

A tired capacitor is one of the most common causes of a D5 that hums but doesn't start. It's a cheap, fast repair when done properly.

Gearbox wear

After many years of daily cycling, the worm-drive gearbox can wear. Symptoms are noise, jerkiness, and eventually complete seizure. A rebuild or full gearbox swap is usually possible.

Backup battery neglect

The D5's on-board charger keeps the 12V battery topped up, but nothing lasts forever. See our battery replacement guide.

FAQs

Well-maintained, 10 to 15 years is normal. Poorly maintained, half that.
