Overhanging planting and beam faults

The commonest callout here is a gate that reverses at the same point with nothing visible in the way.

That is the safety beams doing their job against growth that has drifted into the beam line since last season. A branch twenty centimetres longer than it was is enough, and it is the cheapest fault we attend.

Clearing the beam line and the track before the rains prevents most of it.

Long driveways and buried cable

The house cannot see the gate on most of these stands, which makes the intercom a security function rather than a convenience. On a slider, the track and the rack are dealt with under sliding gate repairs.

Roots lift paving and disturb buried cable, so an intercom that works in dry weather and fails after rain is nearly always a damaged run rather than a failed panel. Chasing that through an established garden is frequently worth less than a proper re-run or a move to GSM. Where the fault turns out to be the motor itself, that is ordinary gate motor repair work rather than anything exotic.

Heavy gates near water

Stands backing onto the spruit see more damp than the average, and damp accelerates two things: corrosion in cable terminations and rust in hinges and wheel bearings.

That shortens the sensible service interval. On a stand near the water, an annual look at the wheels, hinges and terminations is worth more than it is two streets up the hill.
