Ferndale mixes the Randburg business strip with older residential streets behind it, and the two produce different work from the same postcode. Commercial gates on Republic Road cycle hundreds of times a day; the houses behind them have hardware that has been in place for twenty years.
Business gates on the strip
The commercial side is small offices, showrooms and light-industrial units, and their gates carry staff, customers and deliveries all day.
The wear follows the traffic: gears and pinions first, then limits drifting because the gate is repeatedly interrupted, then beams knocked by reversing vehicles. The failures land at closing time, because that is when the gate is finally asked to do the thing it has been struggling at all week. Anything that genuinely cannot wait is handled as an emergency gate repair, at any hour.
What these premises need is a service schedule and a motor rated for the actual cycle count. What they usually have is a domestic unit and a repair history.
Older residential stock, and hardware from the first wave
