Long runs, and where the cost actually sits
On a Kyalami property the motor is rarely the expensive part of a new installation. The cable is.
A gate sixty or a hundred metres from the house needs power and signal out to it, and that run has to be done properly: in conduit, below ground where it crosses anything, and terminated where water cannot reach it. Cable laid on the surface or through a shallow scrape works for a season and then produces intermittent faults that cost more to trace than the original job cost to do. This is why quotes on plot properties vary so widely. Two quotes that differ substantially usually differ in the trenching, not the hardware.
Intercoms when the house cannot see the gate
On a long frontage the household has no line of sight to the entrance, which makes the intercom a security function rather than a convenience.
Where a cable run is feasible, a wired intercom is still the most reliable answer and it keeps working when everything else is down. Where trenching a hundred metres is not practical, GSM removes the cable problem entirely — at the cost of depending on network coverage at the gate and a SIM somebody keeps in credit.
Video is worth it here more than in most places, precisely because nobody can see who is at the gate from the house.
More than one gate, and the one nobody opens
Plot properties usually have a main entrance and at least one service or paddock gate, and the second one is frequently untouched for years. On a swing gate, the hinges, posts and arms come under swing gate repairs.
An unused gate seizes. That cuts both ways: it will not open in an emergency, or it stopped securing the boundary some time ago and nobody noticed.
Walking the whole boundary once a year with everything that opens a gate is a half-hour job on a property this size, and it is the most useful maintenance habit we can recommend here. What it turns up is nearly always cleaning, lubrication and adjustment rather than new hardware. Where the fault turns out to be the motor itself, that is ordinary gate motor repair work rather than anything exotic.
Horses, gates and things a standard installation ignores
On an equestrian property the gate is part of a boundary that has to contain animals as well as exclude people, and that changes some ordinary decisions.
A gate that can be pushed open by a horse leaning on it is not secure however good its motor. Gaps that are irrelevant on a suburban driveway matter where a foal is on the other side. And a gate that closes automatically on a timer is a hazard where animals are led through.
None of that is exotic and all of it is worth saying at the assessment, because a standard specification does not consider it.
Power, distance and what actually reaches the gate
On a long run the electrical question is not only whether the cable is protected but whether the gate is getting the supply it needs at the far end.
Voltage drop over a hundred metres of undersized cable is real, and it presents as a motor that works but labours, or one that struggles under load in a way its rating does not explain. Sizing the cable to the distance rather than to the price is part of doing a plot installation properly, and it is one of the things a cheap quote leaves out.
